The core differences lie in their structure, flow resistance, and application scenarios.
- Butterfly Valve: The disc rotates 90° around the shaft to open/close. Pros: Compact, quick operation, low flow resistance, cost-effective. Cons: Not ideal for high differential pressure or slurry media with solids. Best for: Large-diameter, low-pressure systems requiring quick shut-off or regulation of water or air.
- Gate Valve: The gate moves vertically to block the medium. Pros: Full bore, minimal flow resistance, reliable sealing, high pressure rating. Cons: Slow operation, large dimensions, prone to sticking from scaling. Best for: Pipelines needing full flow, high pressure, and tight sealing for oil, gas, or clean water.
- Selection Rule of Thumb: “For regulation, quick shut-off, large diameter & low pressure – choose butterfly valve. For tight sealing, high pressure, clean liquids – choose gate valve.”

- Carbon Steel (WCB): Most common, suitable for non-corrosive media like water, oil, steam. Temperature range: -29°C to 425°C. Best cost-performance ratio.
